The answer to the founder’s question. The live site kept winning because it demonstrated while every rebuild described, so nothing was rebuilt: the thing that already worked was art-directed.

This one is not archived anywhere, because it is the site you are reading. Every other exhibit in this room was built to replace it.

One family, one face, one weight scale, and IBM Plex Mono for every label and figure.
One face and no switch. The landing hero wears the night palette by asking for it, and the masthead runs over it, so a translucent bar has something of its own to be translucent over.
Connectors drawn as tapered ink ribbons rather than strokes, because a line of one width reads as string and a line that changes weight reads as a hand. A camera that closes on the lit step and pulls back before framing the next one.
A card carousel with no script behind the slide: the track offsets itself from which card carries the class the story already sets, so nothing new has to know the index.
One hundred and thirty six things a visitor can do on the home page, the most in the archive, and it is the site you are reading.

When a rebuild keeps losing to the thing it is meant to replace, the brief is wrong. The site did not need another design. It needed direction.
