Japonisme

Japonisme as composition, not costume. No brushstrokes, no circles, no Japanese characters. What is borrowed is the way space is used: text small and set low or to one side, and the rest of the screen left empty on purpose.

The brief

The same content again, composed a completely different way, to find out how far the brand could travel before it stopped being the brand.

Open it

The whole edition is still standing, every page of it. It is marked archived on every screen, and the prices printed inside it are the ones that were published on the day it was built.

The brand design

How it was built to look like itself.

Type

Zen Old Mincho

400 at 56px, tracking -0.28px

Chosen after rendering Zen Old Mincho, Shippori Mincho, Noto Serif JP, Kaisei Tokumin and Archivo side by side. Its Latin keeps the Mincho stroke contrast without looking like a costume font.

Shape

A twelve column grid used asymmetrically, and no section repeats another section’s shape.

Motion

One gesture. Figures settle into place over 700ms as they arrive.

The one device

Section names run vertically down the left margin, like the label on a hanging scroll, and stay pinned while the section scrolls. The brand mark becomes a seal, the white mark on a vermilion square, used three times in the whole page and never a fourth.

What it got right

The most disciplined thing in the archive. It is the only edition that took a reference and refused its ornament, and it is the reason the house rule about references exists.

Why it lost

It is beautiful, and it is not us. A shop owner looking for a website does not need to admire the margins.

The lesson

Borrow the grammar, never the costume. If your audience can name the reference, you copied the wrong layer.
